Though it started as a trading post for cowboys in the 19th century, Fort Worth has grown to become one of the fastest-developing metropolitan areas in the country. But while there are plenty of skyscrapers and city attractions, that the city still holds it’s Cowtown roots close, too.
The Fort Worth Stockyards Station is the heart of the city’s cowboy culture and full of shopping, dining, and things to do. If you want to take a step back into the heyday of cowboys, be sure to check out the highlights of this one-of-a-kind district!
The History
The Stockyards Station was established all the way back in 1849, along the fork of the Trinity River, by Major Ripley A. Arnold, the founder of Fort Worth. For cowboys heading farther west with their cattle, the Stockyards were the last major outpost along the route, making it a major hub for for commerce.
As time went on, the Stockyards still found success—even during the Great Depression—as the largest livestock-trading center in the region. While the area has modernized in the past few years, it has still preserved the old west roots and cowboy culture that make it so unique.
The Shops
In the Stockyards Station, you’re not going to find traditional shops. But if you’re looking things like a brand new cowboy hat or boots, Texas-style hot sauce, or handmade jewelry, then you’ll find it here.
Once you get to the Stockyards, stop at Barbara’s Custom Hats to meet your perfect match, then head to KO Trading to complete your look. If you work up an appetite, snag some exotic beef jerky (like alligator, kangaroo, or ostrich) from the Beef Jerky Outlet, then grab a cold soda from the Longhorn General Store. Before you leave, grab some souvenirs at Texas Hot Stuff or the Stockyards Trading Post!
The Flavors
If you’re looking for sushi, pasta, seafood, or anything like that, you’ll find it around the Cultural District or Downtown. If you’re looking for authentic Texas flavors, you’ll find it in the Stockyards.
Riscky’s BBQ has been around for 75 years and is renowned around the city as one of the best barbecue joints in the state. Riscky’s Steakhouse is an offshoot of the BBQ joint, where you’ll find a larger menu and a bar. Lastly, another Riscky’s institution, Trailboss Burgers is home to the world-famous Buffalo Burger and patio views of the Cattle Drive. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, we recommend stoping for an ice cream sandwich at the Nestle Toll House Cafe.
The Happenings
Some of the top events in Fort Worth happen in the Stockyards. In addition to live music and weekend gunfights, other highlights include the National Day of the American Cowboy, the Texas Country Music Awards, the Red, White, & Boots Fourth of July celebration, and the largest rodeo in the world.
There are also plenty of attractions to check out, like the Texas Trail of Fame, the Petting Corral, the Cowtown Cattlepen Maze, and the Livestock Exchange.
